Work Session Statement

Below is the statement that was ready during the work session of Bellefonte Borough Council on January 16th, 2024.

Three months ago, I stood before this council, clutching a petition, passionately advocating for the creation of an off-leash dog park in our cherished Bellefonte. Today, I return to provide an update on our progress and emphasize the significance of this endeavor.

Our petition, dedicated to establishing an off-leash dog park, has garnered substantial support within our community. To date, we have amassed 552 signatures online. Notably, 113 of these signatures belong to individuals listing Bellefonte as their address. Additionally, 76 signatures have been collected on paper within the Bellefonte Borough. This impressive total, surpassing 189 signatures from community members with direct ties to our town, underscores the resonance of this cause within our community.

Allow me to clarify a crucial point concerning my initial communication with the council. I recommended Masullo Park as a potentially convenient, expeditious, and cost-effective location for the proposed off-leash park. However, let me be clear: this suggestion was never meant to restrict our options. This esteemed body possesses the authority to select any borough-owned property deemed suitable for this project. Furthermore, the potential for collaboration with our dedicated fire department exists, potentially granting access to the grounds at Lambert Hall. The power to choose remains firmly in your hands.

I ardently believe that the establishment of an off-leash dog park in Bellefonte holds the potential to help rejuvenate our picturesque town. Beyond providing a sanctuary for our four-legged companions, it offers yet another compelling reason for residents of neighboring communities to visit and support our local businesses.

I am committed to contributing towards the costs involved in creating the off-leash park. Once approved by this council, my focus will shift to fundraising efforts. While a few small donations have already been made, I understand that many organizations, businesses, and citizens may be hesitant to contribute to a project that has not yet received official approval.

In conclusion, I implore this council to recognize the overwhelming support of our community and explore the opportunities that this project presents.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
